How do I draft a reply with AI?
Updated October 21, 2026
AI can write a first draft of your reply from the conversation. You read it, change what you want, and send it yourself.
Step by step
- Open the conversation and click Reply. Leave the message box empty.
- Under it, Draft with AI shows a few replies suggested from the conversation. Click one. If the reply box was already open, click into it to see them.
- Or click Describe…, say what the reply should say, choose Short, Medium or Detailed, and click Draft (or press Enter).
- The draft is written into the message box. To stop it, click Stop or press Esc: what's already written stays.
- When it's done, click Keep (or press Enter), Undo to clear it, or ↻ (Retry) for another version.
- Edit the draft if needed, and click Send.
Other ways to draft
- Redraft from the thread: in the AI menu (AI or ⌘ J), this replaces what you wrote with a new draft based on the conversation. Undo brings your text back.
- From the / menu: type / and pick Ask AI to write…, or press ⌘ J while the menu is open. In an empty reply it opens Describe….
Autocomplete
While you type a reply, Breakcold suggests how to finish your sentence in grey text, at the end of a line. Press Tab to accept it, or Esc to dismiss it. Keep typing to ignore it.
Good to know
- Drafts and suggestions are for replies only: not for Forward, notes or the Compose window. Autocomplete also works when you forward an email.
- The draft follows the conversation's language and channel.
- Nothing is sent until you click Send.
- A draft prepared by Karen shows Karen drafted this above the message. Click Discard to clear it.
