How do I insert variables in a message?
Updated October 19, 2026
Variables save you typing: pick the contact's name, your own email or today's date from a list, and Breakcold writes the value into your message.
Step by step
- Open the conversation and click Reply (or Note).
- Place your cursor where the value should go.
- Click Insert variable (next to Quick replies), or type /.
- Search with Search variables..., or browse the groups. Each variable shows its value next to its name.
- Click a variable, or press Enter. Use ↑ and ↓ to move, and Tab to switch group.
What you can insert
- The contact: every visible field of the person records linked to the conversation, grouped under the person's name: their name, email and any other field shown on People records, including the custom fields you added.
- Sender: your First Name, Last Name, Full Name and Email.
- Date & time: Today, Today (Long), Tomorrow, Yesterday, Day of Week, Month, Year, Current Time and Current Date & Time.
Good to know
- The value is written as plain text, not as a placeholder. If you insert the name of Jane Doe, the message contains "Jane Doe", and you can edit it like any other word.
- A field that's empty on the record shows Empty and can't be picked.
- No linked person, no contact fields. Link the conversation to a person record first: see link a conversation to a record. In the Compose window, only the Sender and Date & time groups are offered.
- Dates are written in US format, for example 10/19/2026. Check the value shown in the list before you insert it.
- Typing / also lists your quick replies that have a shortcut.
- A quick reply saved with a variable in it keeps the value that was inserted, not the variable. Quick replies don't fill in names for each contact.
