What does Chief of Staff do on its own?
Updated October 28, 2026
By default, Chief of Staff prepares work and waits for you. You can let it handle some kinds of work by itself, one kind at a time.
Open Chief of Staff, then Your tasks and the Settings tab. You can also open the Chief of Staff menu in a conversation, then What I do on my own.
Auto, Ask me or Off
For each kind of work, choose:
- Auto: it does it.
- Ask me: it prepares it and puts a card in Your tasks.
- Off: it skips it.
| Kind | What it covers | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Reply drafts | Answers to messages that need one, in your voice. | Ask me |
| Follow-ups | Nudges after a conversation goes quiet. | Ask me |
| Chase promises | When a prospect is late on something they promised. | Ask me |
| Meeting requests | Proposed times when someone asks to meet. | Ask me |
| Update fields | Changes to deal and contact fields from what was said. | Ask me |
| Create deals | New deals when a conversation turns into an opportunity. | Ask me |
| Documents to review | Proposals and attachments that need you. | Ask me |
| Meeting prep | A short brief about 15 minutes before each meeting. | Auto |
| After meetings | Follow-up, notes and field changes after a call. | Ask me |
Click Use default to go back to the default for a kind.
Auto send
Auto send is off at first. While it's off, message kinds set to Auto only draft the message and wait for you. Turn it on to let them send by themselves. Every message is still checked for risk before it goes out.
Which field each update changes
Under Update fields, Per field lets you choose Auto, Ask me or Off for each field: Stage, Amount, Close date, Next step, Decision maker, Competitor, Job title and Company.
Chief of Staff only updates fields that already exist. Which field each one updates maps each one to a field of your workspace. Pick a field to turn on close date, next step, decision maker or competitor. Workspace admins choose this mapping under Workspace default.
Just me or the whole workspace
- Just me changes your own settings.
- Workspace default (admins) sets what members get when they haven't changed a setting. Their own choices win.
Quiet hours and notifications
Click Quiet hours, pushes and channels:
- Quiet hours: no notifications in this window. Everything waits for the morning brief.
- Pushes per day: the most important cards only, 5 a day at first. The rest goes to the daily brief.
- Where to notify you: In the app, Desktop notifications and Email.
Good to know
- Create deals stays at Ask me while Chad's settings ask you to review new deals.
- Merging duplicates always asks: it can't be set to Auto.
- What Chief of Staff did on its own shows in Your tasks, under Done, with Undo while it's available.
- These settings are per workspace.
