Which fields, operators and functions can I use in a formula?

This is the reference for computed fields. In the app, click Syntax Help under the formula box for the same summary.
Fields
{field_slug}uses a field of the same record, for example{value}for Deal Value. Slugs are in the Slug column of the object's field list; typing { in the formula box also lets you pick a field.{relation.field}uses a field of a linked record. The first part is the slug of the relation field, for example{company.name}on a deal. You can go two links deep:{contacts.company.name}on a deal is the company of the deal's first person.- When a relation holds several records, only the first one is used.
- What you get depends on the type: a select gives its option label, a currency its amount without the currency code, a member the member's name, a relation alone (
{company}) the linked record's name, a date a number of milliseconds. - Empty values count as 0 in calculations and as empty text in text functions.
Values and operators
- Numbers (
1000,0.2), text in quotes ("Won"),trueandfalse. + - * /calculate.+joins text when one side is text.=,<>(or!=),<,>,<=,>=compare.=is an exact match, capital letters included. The≠character isn't supported: type<>.
Functions
| Group | Function | Gives |
|---|---|---|
| Math | SUM(a, b, …), AVERAGE(a, b, …) | the total, the average |
| Math | MIN(a, b, …), MAX(a, b, …) | the smallest, the largest |
| Math | ROUND(value, decimals), ABS(value) | a rounded number, a number without its sign |
| Text | CONCAT(a, b, …) | the texts joined together |
| Text | LEFT(text, n), RIGHT(text, n) | the first or last n characters |
| Text | LEN(text) | the number of characters |
| Text | UPPER(text), LOWER(text), TRIM(text) | capitals, lowercase, without surrounding spaces |
| Logic | IF(condition, then, else) | one of two values |
| Logic | AND(a, b, …), OR(a, b, …), NOT(a) | true or false |
| Logic | ISEMPTY(value) | true when the value is empty |
| Logic | COALESCE(a, b, …) | the first value that isn't empty |
Examples
- On Deals, a text field:
CONCAT({company.name}, " - ", {stage_customers})gives Northwind Trading - Meeting Booked. - On Deals, a number field:
ROUND({value} * 1.2, 2)gives the deal value with 20% tax. - On People, a text field:
IF(ISEMPTY({email}), "No email", "Has email").
What a formula can't use
- Tasks and Time in Stage: they aren't stored as fields, so the formula gives no value.
- Last interaction and the other interaction dates, such as Next meeting: a formula isn't recalculated when a new message or meeting happens, and through a relation (
{company.last_interaction}) it gives nothing. Don't build formulas on them. - The field the formula is on: never reference it, or the value feeds on itself.
If a formula fails on a record, for example because it divides by zero, that record keeps its previous value.
