How do I add or change the options of a select field?
Updated October 19, 2026
The options of a Select or Multi-Select field are the choices people pick from, such as Inbound, Referral and Event for a lead source. You set them when you create the field (Next Step, then Configure Options), and you can change them at any time.
Step by step
- Go to Settings → Records and open the object, for example Deals. Under Fields, click ••• at the end of the select field, for example Pipeline Stage.
- Choose Edit. Under Options, type a new option in Add option... and press Enter. Click an option's name to rename it, its dot to change its color, and drag the handle to reorder. Each change is saved at once.
Good to know
- Before you add an option, the colored dot next to Add option... picks its color.
- The trash icon on an option deletes it at once, without asking. Records that had this option show the field empty.
- Renaming an option keeps it on every record that has it.
- Save Changes in Edit Field saves the other settings, such as the name or Required. Options don't wait for it.
- Convert to multi-select, next to the type, turns a Select field into a Multi-Select field. Records keep their value, saved filters follow, and boards grouped by this field become table views. You can't convert back.
- The stages of a deal pipeline are the options of the Pipeline Stage field. On the board, Add Column or Manage stages in a column's menu opens Manage Options, where you can also mark stages as Win or Loss. See sales pipelines.
- A CSV import can add the values it doesn't know as new options with Create missing select options.
