How do I link two objects with a relation field?
Updated October 19, 2026
A relation field links records of two objects. People, Companies and Deals are already linked: a deal has a Company field and a People field. Add a relation field for any other link, including to a custom object.
Step by step
- Go to Settings → Records and click the object that gets the field, for example Deals.
- Scroll down to Fields, click Add Field and type a Name, for example Partner.
- Open the Type list and pick Relation.
- Open Related Object Type and choose the object to link to, here Companies.
- Under Relation Type, choose how many records each side links to. Here, Many to One: each deal has one partner, and a company can partner many deals.
- Under Inverse field on Companies, check the field Breakcold adds to the other object so the link shows on both sides. You can change its Name and Slug.
- Click Next, choose whether the field is Required, then click Create Field.
Which relation type to choose
A relation has two sides: your field and its inverse field on the other object, showing the same links. The first word of the type is the object you add the field to.
- One to One: one record on each side, such as a company and its account plan (a custom object).
- One to Many: each record here links to many there, each of those to only one here. The People field of Companies works this way.
- Many to One: the reverse, like the Company field of People: each person works at one company.
- Many to Many: many on both sides, like the People field of Deals.
Good to know
- The relation type and the related object can't be changed later.
- Interaction rollup decides whether the linked records feed this record's last interaction, activity feed and Notes, Files, Meetings and Tasks tabs: Off (the default), Direct linked records, or Direct records and their rollups, which also brings in what those records collect from their own links.
- Deleting a relation field deletes it on both objects with every link it held. This can't be undone.
