Which field types can I use for a custom field?
Updated October 19, 2026
When you add a custom field, the Type decides what the field holds and how you fill it in. Pick it carefully: it can't be changed after the field is created.
The 20 types
- Checkbox: yes or no.
- Currency: an amount with its currency.
- Date: a calendar date.
- Date & Time: a date with a time.
- Email: an email address.
- Facebook: a Facebook profile link.
- LinkedIn: a LinkedIn profile or company page link.
- Location: an address, city, region, country and postal code.
- Member: one of your teammates, for example an account manager. Notify on Assignment tells them when they are picked.
- Multi-Select: several choices from a list you define.
- Number: a number, such as a score or a quantity.
- Phone: a phone number.
- Relation: a link to records of another object, such as a deal's company. See relation fields.
- Select: one choice from a list you define. See select options.
- Telegram: a Telegram username.
- Text: a single line of text.
- Text Area: longer text on several lines.
- Twitter: an X (Twitter) profile.
- URL: a web address.
- WhatsApp: a WhatsApp number.
What each type allows
- Unique identifier: Text, Text Area, Email, URL, Number, LinkedIn, Twitter, Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Phone. A unique field stops duplicates and matches records on import. See unique identifiers.
- Computed Field (a formula): every type except Relation, Select, Multi-Select and Member. See formulas.
- Default Value Template (pre-filled from other fields when a record is created): every type except Relation, Select, Multi-Select, Member and Checkbox.
- Multiple Values: Text, Email, Phone and Member can hold several values when you turn this on. Multi-Select always holds several choices, and a Relation holds one or many records depending on its relation type.
Good to know
- There is no Tags type: create a Multi-Select field and name it Tags.
- A Select field can later become a multi-select, but no other type can be changed. To switch, create a new field of the right type.
- Breakcold compares unique values without letter case, and compares Website values by domain, so www.acme.example and acme.example count as the same value.
